Powerless weekend

This past weekend we received some much needed rain.  I am thankful for the rain, however, I did not appreciate the 22 hour power outage that came with the storm.  Ugh, it brought back memories of the Icepocalypse of 2013, where our power was out for 3 days!  Thankfully Mia was safe and warm in utero for that one.

We live in an older part of Dallas and the power lines run up and down everyone's backyard (as seen in the picture), so this kind of thing is not unusual, but it is still always a big inconvenience.

So Saturday evening, my alarm was going off to get up to go to work, and that's when I heard the same pop I heard last winter right before the power went off.  I immediately ran out of bed and tried to turn on a switch...nothing.  Son of a...

I went to Mikol and started to panic: I needed to get ready for work!  OMG...the milk!  The precious breast milk in the fridge/freezer.  How would he keep it cool?  How would he warm it up? Crap, is his all electric car charged?

Mike had been running errands all day and his car was not charged!  There was no way I could leave them without milk or transportation.  Thankfully my milk on tap does not need refrigeration or heating up.

We called Oncor and reported the outage.  The estimated time of restoration kept getting pushed further and further back.  After a couple of hours of sticking around in the heat and a new estimated restoration time for the following day, Mia and I packed up and left!  Mike stayed behind to tough it out, he was hopeful it would come on soon and he would let us know when it did.

Mia and I headed to my mom's house.  This was the second time this week we sought refuge there, we went earlier in the week when our AC was acting up.  We ended up staying the night, which was the first night Mia had spent away from home.  I'm not sure if it was her being unsure of her surroundings or the fact that her milk supply was right in front of her face all night, but this girl ate every two hours...I thought we were over this!

The next day the power was still out, so we hung out at my mom's house for the day.  I'm not going to lie, it was really nice being back at my mom's house!  My little sister said it was like old times when we were all together in the morning.  My mom cooked for us and Mia had plenty of family there to entertain her and keep her busy!  My brother, sister-in-law, and nieces even came over to come visit with us.  It was fun, kind of like a vacation from my own household responsibilities.

We even were able to make Mia some baby food.  We pureed some butternut squash and mixed it with some breast milk.  I held Mia and her Ammachi fed her.  It was the most she has ever eaten at one time.  She also tried a cheerio for the first time, which she did not like and gagged on.

We used their nutribullet to puree her squash

Meanwhile at our house, Mike was hard at work trying to get our house functional again.  He was able to barely make it to a charging station (for his car) and ended up going to Home Depot to buy a generator.  He got the generator working and plugged the fridge in!  Around 2 pm, the power finally came back on!  It was off from 4 pm on Saturday to 2 pm on Sunday. That's better than 3 days!

Our new generator

We headed back home (we were both exhausted) and were glad to be back.  Mia had missed her daddy and I had missed my husband.  What a champ to stick around to try to get our home back in order for us!

We were able to turn this inconvenience into a nice time with family and a learning experience to be better prepared for next time.  I hope everyone else was able to reap good things from the weekend rain!

p.s. I was able to save all the breast milk in our freezer, since I took it over to my mom's house to store in her freezer...YAY!
