Our trip to the blueberry farm

A month ago, I took Mia to go pick blueberries with her grandpa, aunts, uncles and cousins. Unfortunately Mike had to show houses while we were there, but I took plenty of pictures to show him when we got home.

There are a lot of pick your own produce farms around the Metroplex (find farms here and here). We went to Blase Family Farm in Rockwall. They have blueberries in the summer and pumpkins in the Fall. They are now closed for blueberry season, but will reopen in October for their pumpkin patch.

The blueberry bushes are a short hike from the entrance of the farm through a wooded area, so a stroller is not ideal. It was also suggested to use bug spray for possible chiggers. Thankfully, we did not have that issue!

Once we got to the clearing, there were rows and rows of blueberry bushes. They provided us with buckets and baskets, so we got to picking.

I wasn't sure if Mia would understand the concept (she was 16 months at the time), but she watched her older cousins/uncle and caught on quickly. She really enjoyed picking the berries and putting them in her bucket.

My nieces and little brother were on it, they were expert blueberry pickers.

Mia did not quite grasp picking only the ripe berries, but that was a simple fix of just sorting through the berries right before we left. Once everyone picked their fill of berries, we took our buckets/baskets to the cashier. It was $4/pint of blueberries.

Mia picked half a pint of blueberries, so we had this awesome experience and got some delicious organic blueberries for only $2...you can't beat that!

This is definitely going to become a tradition for our family. It's fun and when Mia gets older she'll have a better understanding of where her food comes from and what goes into harvesting it.
