Throwback Thursday: Mia's Gender Reveal

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to have a gender reveal party.  I got my husband on board and I started planning.  I scoured Pinterest and blogs for ideas.  We were in the process of moving, so we decided to wait until we moved to have the party at the new house.  We had been in our new house for 10 days when we had the party with A LOT of unexpected issues that came up when we moved in (fridge/washer/dryer did not fit, water line did not hook up to the fridge, no garbage disposal, couldn't get both cars parked into the garage, etc.).  However, somehow, we pulled it off and it is now a memory we can feel proud about.

Mikol and I had known for almost a month that Mia was a girl, but we kept the secret until the gender reveal.  I was almost 25 weeks when we had the party!  Since we knew the gender, we wanted the big reveal to include everyone else there.

We asked everyone to pick either team blue or team pink.  About 75% of the people there were team blue!

You can get the team pink/team blue buttons here

We played games that put the two teams against each other.  We dyed one set of jenga blocks pink and the other blue and had a jenga competition.  The directions I used to dye the blocks are here.

The other game we played was ball toss where you had to get the ping pong ball into your team’s colored cups to score points for your team.

Leading up to the big gender reveal, I read old wive's tales about gender predictions and what the tales said about my pregnancy.  For example, since I was craving sweets, the old wive's tales said she was a girl.  The old wive's tales were 50/50, so that did not help the party-goers out, but it was fun nonetheless.  You can get a copy of the old wive's tales quiz here.

The different ways I thought about using for the reveal were:
  • A cake (that was dyed either pink or blue that you cut into to find out) - I decided that was more for us than the people at the party
  • A piñata- It was October and we had it at night, so I did not want to risk it being cold or doing it in the dark.  The other issue I had with a piñata was if someone hit it and only a few pink pieces fell out, that would be anticlimactic.  I saw on a blog how someone had it to where only one piece of candy had a piece of paper with the gender on it, I liked that idea better.
  • Balloons in a box- Again did not want to do it outside.
  • Silly string- I did not want to clean up the mess, buy that many cans of silly string, or go outside.

So we decided on scratch offs!  I saw this idea online and fell in love with it.  I ordered them off Etsy and loved how they turned out.  This way everyone could have their own scratch-off and everyone found out together.

It's a GIRL!

Here is the scoreboard for the night, team blue ended up winning the games, but not the big reveal!

We had a Boy or Girl? cake that had everyone assuming the reveal was going to be done with a cake cutting, everyone was surprised to see the scratch off tickets

I made lips and mustache chocolate candies to stick with the theme.  You can find the molds here and here.

We had a place where people could suggest names, some were serious, some not so much (like "Tron" as pictured)

Our favors included these HErSHEy's bars, kisses, and a baby bottle pop

We had a ton of fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat, moving chaos and all!
